The chemical analysis of lacquer was pioneered around 1880 by Ishimatsu Ketsu, Yoshida Hikorokuro, and others, but Mikami Kisaburo named the main component of Japanese lacquer as urushiol, and Majima Toshiyuki determined its chemical formula to _{be C21H32O2} , and summarized it in ₁₉₂₄ in his book "Research on Lacquer." After the war, research on lacquer progressed through research at the Tohoku branch of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry's Crafts Guidance Office, and research has progressed, including elucidation of the unique durability of lacquer using electron microscopes and identification of ancient lacquer-like substances using infrared spectroscopy. …
