…In ancient Japan, there was black lacquer containing ash ink and transparent lacquer that is thought to have contained natural dyes. The chemical analysis of lacquer was pioneered around 1880 by Ishimatsu Ketsu, Yoshida Hikorokuro, and others, but Mikami Kisaburo named the main component of Japanese lacquer as urushiol, and Majima Toshiyuki determined its chemical formula to be C21H32O2 , and summarized it in 1924 in his book "Research on Lacquer."
