Shoyo Nakano

Japanese: 中野逍遥 - なかのしょうよう

A Chinese poet. His real name was Shigetarou, and his pen name was Ikei. He was also known by other names such as Tanendo. He was born in Uwajima, Iyo Province. He studied Chinese classics from an early age, and graduated from the Department of Chinese Classics at the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University. He excelled in Chinese poetry and classical Chinese while at school, and was expected to have a bright future, but he died of pneumonia in the year he graduated. Many of his Chinese poems are filled with the passion and melancholy of love. His seniors and friends, who regretted the loss of his poetry and prose, published two volumes of "Shoyo's Posthumous Manuscripts" on the first anniversary of his death, containing over 300 poems and more. Shimazaki Toson mourned Shoyo's death in his poetry collection "Wakanashu."

漢詩人。本名重太郎(しげたろう)，字は威卿。別号澹艶堂(たんえんどう)など。伊予国宇和島生れ。早くより漢学を学び，東京帝国大学文科大学漢学科卒。在学中から漢詩・漢文をよくし，将来を嘱望されていたが，卒業した年に肺炎により死去。恋愛の情熱や憂愁を込めた漢詩が多い。その詩文の散逸を惜しんだ先輩・友人らにより，一周忌に《逍遥遺稿》２巻が刊行，詩300余首ほかを収める。島崎藤村は詩集《若菜集》で逍遥の死をいたんだ。
