A city in Fife, central east Scotland, UK. Population 11,302 (1981). The place is named after Andrew, one of the Twelve Apostles and the patron saint of Scotland. It faces St. Andrew's Bay, an inlet of the North Sea, and was the religious center of Scotland until the Reformation, but is now known as a resort town. The town's origins date back to a Celtic religious settlement in the 6th century, but a church dedicated to St. Andrew was built in the 8th century and it developed into a bishopric in around 908 and an archbishopric in 1472, becoming the most important religious city in the Kingdom of Scotland.
