Japanese: ジャスミン - じゃすみん（英語表記）jasmine

The English name of a plant in the genus Jasmine (Jasmine genus) of the family Oleaceae (APG classification: Oleaceae). It is an evergreen shrub with about 400 species distributed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It is particularly common in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Pacific countries. The well-known Jasmine (Jasmine sambac L.) is native to Arabia and India, is a semi-creeping plant that grows to a height of 1.5-3 meters, and has broad ovate leaves that grow in opposite pairs or in whorls of three. It produces several white flowers at the ends of the branches, 2 cm in diameter, with about nine petals and elliptical or circular lobes. There are also double-flowered varieties. The flowers have a strong fragrance, and in China, the flowers are picked early in the morning, dried, and mixed into tea, which is called jasmine tea. In the Philippines, it is known as sampaguita and is the national flower. Leis are also made from this flower in Thailand and Hawaii. In Japan, they are planted in 3 to 5 inch pots and enjoyed as ornamental plants.

Another variety, J. polyanthum Fr., is native to China and grows vines well, with opposite leaves similar to those of the Nandina. In spring, it produces clusters of 30 to 40 fragrant pure white flowers. It is suitable for viewing in a pot as a lantern, and in warmer regions it can be used as a garden tree, as a hedge or pole.

Other members of the jasmine family include the Indonesian national flower, Jasmine jasmine, and the winter jasmine, which is used as a garden tree.

Cultivation

In winter, keep Jasminum sambac at 3-5°C or higher, and Hagoromo jasmine at a temperature that does not freeze. Plant those that grow outdoors in a warm place, expose them to plenty of sunlight, and choose soil that has good drainage. Propagation is by cuttings, and insert cuttings with three or more leaves attached during the rainy season.

モクセイ科（APG分類：モクセイ科）ソケイ属（ジャスミン属）植物の英名。常緑低木で、世界の熱帯から亜熱帯に約400種分布する。とくにアフリカ、東南アジア、太平洋諸国に多い。よく知られているマツリカ（茉莉花）J. sambac (L.) Aitonはアラビア、インドの原産で、半つる性、高さ1.5～3メートルとなり、葉は広卵形で対生もしくは3枚が輪生する。花は枝先に数個つき、白色で径2センチメートル、花弁は9枚前後、裂片は楕円(だえん)形か円形。ほかに八重咲きの品種もある。花は芳香が強く、中国では花を早朝に摘んで乾かし、お茶に混ぜて飲み、ジャスミンティーの名でよばれている。フィリピンではサンパギータの名で親しまれ、国花とされている。またタイ、ハワイなどではこの花でレイをつくる。日本では3～5号鉢に植え、観賞する。

　ほかにハゴロモジャスミンJ. polyanthum Fr.は中国原産で、つるがよく伸び、ナンテンに似た葉を対生する。春、香気のある純白の花を30～40個房状に開く。鉢で行灯(あんどん)仕立てで観賞するのに適するほか、暖地では庭木として生け垣やポール仕立てにする。

　ジャスミンの仲間はこのほかに、インドネシアの国花であるジャワソケイがある。また庭木などにするオウバイもこの仲間である。
