Mannoike Pond

This reservoir is located in Mannou Town, Nakatado County, in the central-southern part of Kagawa Prefecture. It is said to have been built by Michimori no Ason, the governor of Sanuki Province, during the Taiho era (701-704). It subsequently collapsed several times, and Kukai (Kobo Daishi) was dispatched as the head priest of the reservoir, who repaired it in 821 (Kōnin 12). However, it continued to break down again after that, and it was left abandoned from the Kamakura period to the early Edo period, when a village developed in the middle of the pond. In 1628 (Kan'ei 5), during the reign of Ikoma Takatoshi, lord of Takamatsu Domain, Nishijima Hachibei, who was invited from Tsu Domain, rebuilt Mannouike. After several construction works to raise the pond's surface area, the pond was expanded to a large reservoir with a circumference of 21 kilometers and a reservoir capacity of 15.4 million cubic meters in 1959 (Showa 34). Currently, water is diverted from the neighboring Doki River and Saita River to supplement the water shortage. In 1998 (Heisei 10), the national park Sanuki Mannou Park was opened on the hills on the northeastern bank of Mannouike Pond.

香川県中南部、仲多度(なかたど)郡まんのう町にある溜池(ためいけ)。大宝(たいほう)年間（701～704）に讃岐(さぬき)国司道守朝臣(みちもりのあそん)が築いたという。その後決壊を繰り返し、空海（弘法(こうぼう)大師）が築池別当として派遣され821年（弘仁12）修築した。しかしその後も破堤を繰り返し、鎌倉時代から江戸初期までは放置され、池の中に村落ができたという。1628年（寛永5）高松藩主生駒高俊(いこまたかとし)のとき、津藩から招かれた西島八兵衛(はちべえ)が満濃池を再築した。その後数回のかさ上げ工事を行い、1959年（昭和34）には湛水(たんすい)面積138.5ヘクタール、貯水量1540万立方メートル、周囲約21キロメートルの大溜池となった。現在は隣接する土器(どき)川、財田(さいた)川より導水し、不足する水源を補っている。1998年（平成10）には、満濃池の北東岸丘陵地に国営公園の讃岐まんのう公園が開園した。
