…Italian sculptor. Born in Florence, he probably trained as a goldsmith in Ghiberti's workshop. His first famous work was the marble Cantoria (choir stall) for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence (1431-38), in which he modelled on ancient sculptures and created perfectly Renaissance figures with balanced proportions and archaic costumes. This is a companion piece to Donatello's Cantoria.
