Tujia people (English spelling) Tǔ jiā zú

Japanese: トゥチャ族(土家族) - トゥチャぞく（英語表記）Tǔ jiā zú

One of China's ethnic minorities. Population: 5,725,000 (1990). They call themselves Pitka (meaning local people). They are found mainly in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in western Hunan Province and the Enshi region in western Hubei Province, with a small number living in eastern Sichuan Province and eastern Guizhou Province. They live in hilly areas at altitudes of 400 to 1,500 meters, with a mild climate, an average annual temperature of 15°C, and an annual rainfall of 1,300 mm, making them well suited to agriculture. Their main crops are rice, potatoes, corn, and wheat. Their language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family and the Tibeto-Burman family.
