A former town in Ketaka District, in the central-eastern part of Tottori Prefecture. The main settlement, Shikano, developed as a castle town after 1580, and is known for its folk crafts such as Shikano hats, Noh masks, and fans. It is also home to Kosei-ji Temple, where the grave of Yamanaka Shikansuke is located. Shikano Onsen has simple spring water of 55-72°C and is designated as a national health resort hot spring. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Tottori City along with Kokufu Town, Fukube Village, Kawara Town, Mochigase Town, and Saji Village in Iwami District, Ketaka Town in Ketaka District, and Aoya Town. 52.77 km2 . Population 4,431 (2003).

Kano [town] [Kano]

A former town in Tsuno District in central-eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. Occupying the mountainous area upstream of the Nishiki River, the town cultivates rice, livestock, and vegetables and fruit. Wasabi and shiitake mushrooms are produced in abundance. The main settlement is on a terrace on the left bank of the Nishiki River, and is an important transportation hub between Tokuyama and Masuda. It is served by the Chugoku Expressway. There are ski resorts at Shiraigahara and Iwanabe. In April 2003, it merged with Tokuyama City, Shinnanyo City, and Kumage Town to form Shunan City. Area: 181.46 km2. Population: 4,520 (2000).

山口県中東部,都濃(つの)郡の旧町。錦川上流の山地を占め,米作,畜産,蔬菜・果樹栽培を営む。ワサビ,シイタケの産が多い。主集落は錦川左岸の段丘上にあり,徳山〜益田間の交通要地。中国自動車道が通じる。白井ヶ原,石鍋(いわなべ)のスキー場がある。2003年4月,徳山市,新南陽市,熊毛町と合併し周南市となる。181.46km2。4520人(2000)。
