The Italian Waldenses separated from and were distinguished from the "Poor of Lyon." Led by John of Roncaud around 1205, they spread among the city's artisans and small merchants, and were strongly influenced by the religious movement "living in the style of the early church." They were hostile to the hierarchy of the church, recognized clerical authority for laypeople, and practiced communal living and individual poverty. They had a tendency towards lay religion. They also spread to Germany, where they were called "Luncali" after their leader. [Sato Masanori] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
