Kanakurayama Kofun - Kanakurayama Kofun

Located in Sawada, Naka Ward, Okayama City, this keyhole-shaped tumulus is thought to date back to the early 5th century and is over 160 meters long. It is located in the eastern part of Okayama City, halfway up the long, east-west Misaoyama mountain, at an altitude of 115 meters. In 1953 (Showa 28), the Kurashiki Archaeological Museum investigated the top of the circular mound and discovered two pit-style stone chambers that had already been excavated, but one of them had a small secondary stone chamber that was still intact and contained four clay clay figurines containing a large number of iron objects such as agricultural, craft, and fishing tools and weapons. This became important evidence for understanding the iron object grave goods in large tumuli from the first half of the period and the shapes of the various iron objects. Additionally, the way in which the haniwa figures were arranged in a square around each of the two pit-type stone chambers, and the figurative forms of the haniwa figures, such as shield-shaped and lid-shaped ones, that were included among them, are of interest in the study of ancient tombs of this period.

岡山市中区沢田にある全長160メートル余の5世紀初頭ころとみられる前方後円墳。岡山市街地の東部で東西に細長い操山(みさおやま)の中ほど、標高115メートルの頂上にあり、1953年（昭和28）倉敷考古館が後円部頂を調査し、発見された2基の竪穴(たてあな)式石室は既掘を受けていたが、そのうちの1基に付設された小形の副石室は完存し、農・工・漁具と武器など多数の鉄器を納めた埴輪(はにわ)質合子(ごうす)4個があった。これは、前半期大形古墳の鉄器副葬状況と各種鉄器の形状を知る重要資料となった。また、2基の竪穴式石室をそれぞれ方形に取り囲んで配列された埴輪の樹立のあり方と、そのうちに含まれた盾形、蓋(きぬがさ)形などの形象埴輪は、この時期の古墳研究上注目される。
