Hojo Shigetoki's Family Precepts - Hojo Shigetoki's Family Precepts
These are family precepts written by Hojo Shigetoki for his descendants in the mid-13th century. They are the oldest family precepts of a samurai family. There are two types of precepts that are said to be Shigetoki's: "Rokuhara Palace Family Precepts" and "Gokurakuji Palace Messages." There are two theories about "Gokaikun," one that says it was written as a lesson for his son Nagatoki when he married and assumed the position of Rokuhara Tandai near 1247 (Hōji 1), and the other that says it was written on the occasion of Nagatoki's coming-of-age ceremony. "Messages" was written near the time of Shigetoki's death (1261), when he was retiring to a mountain villa in Gokurakuji Valley after becoming a monk, and is believed to be one of the admonitions he sent to his sons and grandchildren, including Nagatoki.
