...In the field of art, Basho's theory of "Fuga no Makoto" (Sincerity of Elegance), which recognized the life of the universe (microcosm) in all objects and sought to clarify one's true nature by empathizing with that life, and Oninuki's theory of haiku, which declared that "there is no haikai outside of truth" (Dokugoto). Meanwhile, new movements were seen in the world of waka poetry, and Kada Azumaro, a Shinto revivalist, valued the truth of human feelings, and his disciple Kamo Mabuchi began to assert the theory of "Makoto of poetry," which states that one should express what one thinks in one's heart as it is, without being bound by reason or irrationality. Mabuchi's theory of truth was widely inherited by his school, and later became the theory of poetry of Ozawa Roan, who preached "singing the truth of what is in one's heart right now," and Kagawa Kageki, who preached "calmly investigating and perfecting the sincerity of one's heart."...
