A Finnish plucked zither-like instrument. Traditionally, it had five horsehair strings, but now it has 28 to 36 metal strings stretched in a fan shape around a wing-shaped resonator. It is placed horizontally on the lap or a stand and plucked with the fingers of both hands. The melody is played with the right hand and the accompaniment with the left. In addition to folk songs, dances, and marches, it also plays pieces composed for the kantele. Its name also appears in the epic poem, the Kalevala.
