〘Noun〙① The act of reciting a waka poem with a melody added to the words and phrases. ② The act of composing a poem in a melody according to a certain style and format at a poetry gathering and presenting it. Also, the person who does this. The origins can be traced back to at least the mid-Heian period. It remains today as an event at the beginning of the New Year's poetry gathering, where selected poems on imperial themes are presented. Waka reading.
