It grows in colonies under or on the forest edges of hilly or low mountainous areas, and is widely distributed throughout Japan, Korea, China, and the Indochina Peninsula. The Japanese name was given to this plant because the spherical nuts that grow in a raceme resemble polka dots. It grows by extending slender creeping branches underground. The plant is 30-50 cm tall, and the stems and inflorescences have short, curly hairs. The leaves grow in pairs, and the leaf blades are long and ovate, 5-10 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, and have long stalks. The inflorescences grow axillary to the terminal and upper leaves, and some can reach 15 cm in length. …
