A Japanese painter born in Kyoto. He studied under Tsuchida Eirin, and from 1881 (Meiji 14) he studied under Kono Bairei of the Shijo school, taking the pen name Seiho. The following year, his works "Wild Geese and Cranes" and "Waterfall" were selected for the first Domestic Painting Exhibition. In 1884, he exhibited "Mountains and Waterfalls" and "Flowers and Birds" at the second Domestic Painting Exhibition, for which he received a commendation. After that, he won many awards at exhibitions and expositions both in Japan and abroad for his works that combined the Shijo school style with the classical painting style. During this time, he began working at the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School in 1883, and in 1895 became a teacher at the Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts. From 1900 (Meiji 33) to the following year, he traveled to Europe. After returning to Japan, he changed his pen name to Seiho, and developed a fresh style of painting by absorbing and assimilating the techniques of Turner and Corot. In 1907 he became a judge for the first Bunten exhibition, and held the position until 1913 (Taisho 7), exhibiting such representative works as "Are Evening Shower" and "A Pictorial Beginning." In 1918 he became an Imperial Household Artist, and in 1919 he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and from 1921 he served as a professor at the Kyoto Municipal Painting College. In 1937 (Showa 12), he received the first Order of Culture. Other representative works include "Raindrop" and "Spotted Cat," and many of his pupils include Uemura Shōen, Nishimura Goun, Nishiyama Suishō, Tsuchida Bakusen, Ono Chikkyō, and Tokuoka Shinsen.
