To tsukubaru. ※Sarugaku Dangi (1430), Noh coloring: "As Ushi-dayu was about to open his mouth to speak, he turned towards the drummer and tsukumau." ② To prostrate oneself. To bow deeply. To squat. To tsukumau. ※Meigoki (1275), 9: "What about tsukubafu? Is this what you do when you are in front of someone you respect?" ③ To be disheartened. To become useless. To weaken. To tsukumau. ※Joruri, Jitō Tenno Uta Gunpō (1713), 5: "The Emperor of Fortune tsukubafu grabs her clothes and pulls her out."

Uzu-suma-ru [squatting]

〘Transitive 4th radical〙 Does it mean to gather together in a crouched position? ※Kojiki (712), Vol. 2, Folk Song: "The sparrows in the garden, Uzusumari, are here, and today, too, we are living in a world of sake." [Additional note] This is the only example found in the Kojiki, Vol. 2, Folk Song, and the meaning is unclear. It has been suggested that "sumaru" is related to the "sumaru" in "misumaru (misumaru)," and "uzu" is related to the "uzu" in "uzukumaru (squatting)," or the "uji" in "ujimushi (maggot)."

Crouching [Squatting]

〘Noun〙 A type of ceramic flower vase. Found in Koshigaraki, Koiga, etc., it is 10 to 20 centimeters tall and has a wide base, and is named after the likeness of a person crouching. Before the Muromachi period, it was used by farmers for tea jars and oil jars. It became known after tea masters prized it.

Tsukubae Tsukubae [Square]

〘noun〙 = Tsukubai (water basin) ※A person named Takezawa Sensei (1924-25)〈Nagayo Yoshiro〉Takezawa Sensei's Cherry Blossom Viewing "Having said this, the teacher got up, squatted on the veranda, and poured water from the tsukubai onto the plum blossoms in the pot."

Tsukuma/ Utsukumafu [Squatting]

〘Self-consciousness Ha 4〙 (also "Tsugumau") = Tsukubau (Squatting) ※ Gyokujinsho (1563) 22 "A goose, with its wings spread and its head swollen, was perched on the branch of a boxwood tree."

Tsukuba-ru [Squatting]

〘 self-conjugated 5th (4th) 〙 To squat. To crouch. To turn into a ball. ※Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru-ni (1767) "The story of the person who turned into a ball is written in the ground."

うず‐すま・る【蹲】

〘自ラ四〙 うずくまって集まる意か。※古事記(712)下・歌謡「庭雀 宇受須麻理(ウズスマリ)ゐて 今日もかも 酒みづくらし」[補注]「古事記‐下・歌謡」に見える例だけで語義についてははっきりしない。「すまる」は「みすまる(御統)」の「すまる」、「うず」は「うずくまる(蹲)」の「うず」、または「うじむし(蛆虫)」の「うじ」との関係が説かれている。

うずくまる【蹲】

〘名〙 陶製花生けの一種。古信楽(こしがらき)、古伊賀などにあり、高さ一〇~二〇センチメートル、底が広く、人がうずくまっている姿に見立てた呼称。室町以前に農家で茶壺、油壺などに用いた。茶人が珍重してから知られるようになった。

うずくま・う うずくまふ【蹲】

〘自ハ四〙 「うずくまる(蹲)」の変化した語。※浮世草子・好色一代女(1686)三「広敷の片隅にお家久しき親仁、肴入(さかないれ)の番の為に独うづくまひてふしける」

つくばえ つくばへ【蹲】

〘名〙 =つくばい(蹲)※竹沢先生と云ふ人(1924‐25)〈長与善郎〉竹沢先生の花見「先生はさう云って起って、縁にしゃがみ、鉢の梅につくばへの水をかけてゐた」

つくま・う つくまふ【蹲】

〘自ハ四〙 (「つぐまう」とも) =つくばう(蹲)※玉塵抄(1563)二二「鵝の鳥がはねをのしてえぶくれて柘の木の枝についつぐまうていたぞ」

つくば・る【蹲】

〘自ラ五(四)〙 しゃがむ。うずくまる。つくまる。※雑俳・柳多留‐二(1767)「つくばった噺は土へ何か書」
