Kawamozuku - Kawamozuku

Japanese: カワモズク - かわもずく

A freshwater red alga of the family Bacillaceae that resembles a mass of frog eggs and is found in the flowing water of streams and irrigation canals from springs all over the world. The body consists of a central axis with segments and whorls emerging from the segments, and a large amount of agar is secreted around them, giving the body the shape of an agar rosary. There are many species in the Bacillus genus, and it is not easy to identify the species. The main characteristics for classification are the degree of development of the whorls, the position of the cyst, the shape of the fertilized hairs, and whether the plants are dioecious or monoecious. Representative species include B. moniliforme Roth, B. virgatum Sirodot, and B. gallaei Sirodot.

世界各地の湧泉からの小川や灌漑用水路などの流水中にみられるカエルの卵塊のようなカワモズク科の淡水産の紅藻。体は節をもつ中軸と，節から出る輪生枝とからなり，それらの周囲には多量の寒天物質が分泌されるので，体は寒天質の数珠（じゆず）の形状となる。カワモズク属には種類数が多く，種の同定は容易でない。分類には，輪生枝の発達の程度，囊果（のうか）の位置，受精毛の形，雌雄異株か同株かなどが主な形質となる。代表的な種に，カワモズクB.moniliforme Roth，アオカワモズクB.virgatum SirodotおよびヒメカワモズクB.gallaei Sirodotなどがある。
