A Japanese settlement in Itapúa Department, Paraguay, in central South America. It is located about 100 km north-northeast of Encarnación, and covers a vast area of 85,000 hectares. About 300 households settled there in 1960, and by 1967 the number had dropped to 285, but they have been successful in cultivating tallow and vegetables. In particular, since a tallow plant was built in Encarnación with Japanese capital in 1968, the lives of immigrants have become more stable. Alto Paraná originally meant "upstream of the Paraná River," and the area upstream from the confluence of the Paraná River and the Paraguay River is generally called Alto Paraná. The Alto Paraná Department is adjacent to the north of Itapúa Department. [Masami Ichikawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
