In Greek mythology, Aeolus is the god of wind. He is the son of Hippotes or the sea god Poseidon. He lives on the island of Aeolian, where he keeps the winds locked in a cave or in a leather bag. When Odysseus was shipwrecked on this island on his way home, the wind god welcomed him kindly and gave him a leather bag containing all the winds except the fair winds for his home island of Ithaca. However, while Odysseus was sleeping, his companions mistakenly opened the bag thinking it was wine, and all the winds blew out, causing a terrible storm, and the ship was driven back to Aeolian again. Odysseus again asked for fair winds, but the wind god refused his help, fearing the wrath of the gods. Aeolus is also identified with the son of Helen, ancestor of the Greeks, and the nymph Orseis, and the son of Poseidon and Arne (or Melanippe), both of whom are ancestors of the Aeolians.
