Good wife and wise mother - Ryosaikenbo

Japanese: 良妻賢母 - りょうさいけんぼ

A word that expresses the ideal image of a woman based on the idea that a woman's primary role is to keep the home in order, give birth to children, and raise them. In other words, the ideal woman was to be a good wife and a wise mother, and therefore the goal of education. This word began to be used in the early Meiji period, but its background was the male superiority and inferiority of women ideology of Confucianism, which was the ideology of feudal society, and under this ideology, intellectual education was considered unnecessary and harmful for women, and at the same time, women's social activities were severely restricted. Although the idea of gender equality was introduced after the Meiji Restoration, it hardly took root, and the ideal image of a good wife and wise mother was held up, and education that was significantly lower than that of men and focused on the arts and crafts was implemented mainly in girls' high schools. From the Meiji period until the end of World War II, this was the basic philosophy of women's education in Japan.

女子の本来の任務は家を整え，子を産み，子を育てることにあるとする思想に基づいた婦人の理想像を表わした語。つまり，よき妻であり賢い母であることが婦人の理想とされ，したがって教育の目標とされた。この語は明治初期から用いられはじめたものであるが，その背景には，封建制社会のイデオロギーである儒教の男尊女卑思想があり，この思想のもとで女子には知的教養は不必要かつ有害とされ，同時に女子の社会活動が著しく制限された。維新以後男女同権思想が移入されながらも，ほとんど定着せず，良妻賢母を理想像として掲げ，男子に比べて著しく低い，技芸にかたよった教育が高等女学校を中心として実施された。明治以後，第2次世界大戦終了まで日本の女子教育の基本理念であった。
