A river that flows through the southern part of the Kanazawa Plain in Ishikawa Prefecture. Its total length is 72 km. It originates at Mt. Hakusan, which forms the border between Ishikawa and Gifu Prefectures, and flows north, joining the Ozoe River, which also originates at Mt. Hakusan, and the Dainichi River, which originates at Mt. Dainichi in the west. It is also called the Ushiku River from the confluence of the Yanagidani River and the Yunotani River at the uppermost reaches to the confluence with the Ozoe River. It flows out into the plain in the northern part of Hakusan City, turns west, and flows into the Sea of Japan while forming a wide alluvial fan. The upper reaches are the Tetori Group of the Mesozoic Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, and in the southern part of Hakusan City, there is a silicified wood production area designated as a national natural monument. Both the main and tributaries carve deep V-shaped valleys, and hot springs such as Chumiya, Iwama, and Hakusan well up, and the Iwama fountain towers upstream of the Ozoe River are a national special natural monument. Many dams have been built to use meltwater from heavy snowfall. In the middle reaches of the river, river terraces have developed, and the Tedori Gorge is located. The area has been designated as Shishiku-Tedori Prefectural Natural Park. The alluvial fan was converted into rice paddies during the Edo period, and is known as a producer of early-season rice. It is the central grain-producing region of the Kanazawa Plain, and is irrigated by the Shichika Irrigation Canal.
