A peninsula jutting out into the English Channel in northwestern France. It occupies the northern half of the Manche department, in the northernmost part of Normandy. In Japan, it is also called the Normandy Peninsula. The main industries in the inland hilly areas are raising dairy cows, and along the coast are growing apples and vegetables, especially carrots. The area around Cape La Hague at the tip is beautifully scenic, and the coast has many resorts such as beaches and fishing ports, with Cherbourg being its central city. During the Normandy landings in June 1944, towards the end of World War II, Allied forces also landed near the mouth of the Beale River on the east side of the peninsula, and secured Cherbourg three weeks later.
