…In 1891, he became a pupil of Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908), a senior disciple of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and from the age of 17 he became known for his newspaper illustrations, becoming acquainted with Ozaki Koyo and Izumi Kyoka. In 1901, he formed a group with Ohno Shizuka and Hirezaki Eiho, and attempted to move from ukiyo-e to full-scale painting, producing “The Grave of Lady Ichiyo” in 1909. During the Bunten period (1907-18), he exhibited masterpieces such as “Boating on the Sumida River” and “A Tasteful Day,” and became a judge at the first Teiten exhibition in 1919. …
