The public baths found in the Arab world were created when the Turks occupied the Byzantine Empire and preserved the Roman-style public bath system while incorporating styles that had developed in the Orient since ancient times. They are called ḥammām, and small ones still remain in the downtown area of Cairo and Damascus. The internal structure is such that when you enter the entrance, there is a large hall called a maslaha that also serves as a changing room, and a mu'allim (master) at the reception desk who serves customers and offers tea and tobacco.
