...Sludge deposits in ports, lakes, rivers, dams, etc. are generated when suspended solids contained in urban sewage and industrial wastewater discharged into public waters, suspended solids that run off with rainwater from urban roads, or suspended solids that run off from forests and fields, or when plankton in the water die and settle and accumulate. As such, sludge is generated from a variety of fields and processes, and its characteristics are diverse, including sludge containing harmful substances generated from the electrolytic caustic soda industry and plating industry, organic sludge generated from sewage systems, sewage treatment facilities, septic tanks, the paper and pulp industry, and the food industry, inorganic sludge generated from the ceramics, metals, and mines, oil-containing sludge generated from petroleum-related industries, and mixed organic and inorganic sludge (so-called mud) that accumulates in ports, lakes, rivers, etc. The Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law (abbreviated as Waste Disposal Law) classifies sludge into industrial waste generated from business activities and general waste generated from daily life, such as sludge from septic tanks.
