A European legend. It was originally a Celtic folk tale, and was sung in many epics, mainly in France, in the 12th and 13th centuries. The best-known of these is the Anglo-Norman Thomas of Wales, and the German Gottfried von Strassburg, who based it on the Anglo-Norman. Tristan, who is sent by his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall, to marry the Irish princess Isolde (Iseult in French), accidentally drinks an aphrodisiac on the ship on the way back, and the two fall in love, transcending the laws of this world. Tristan is banished and meets another Isolde (Isolde of the White Hands), but when he is seriously injured and near death, he loses his strength while trying to call Isolde, and Isolde dies clinging to her body. The theme of the purification of love through death has had an impact on later generations, and Wagner's music drama (three acts, first performed in 1865) is particularly famous. → Related topics Arthurian legend | The Ring of the Nibelung | Nilsson | Bülow Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
