Nearchos - Nearchos (English spelling)

He was one of Alexander the Great's most trusted ministers. He was from Crete. He was particularly outstanding as a naval admiral, commanding the voyage down the Indus River and the coastal voyage to the Persian Gulf at the end of the expedition. He was also expected to be an admiral for Alexander's Arabian expedition plan. After Alexander's death, he served under Antigonus I, and is said to have been killed in battle at the Battle of Gaza (312 BC). He is said to have written a nautical journal-style work, but it was destroyed and is thought to have only been used as a source for Arrian's "India" and Strabo's "Geography" (both from the Roman period). The quoted lines are highly credible.

アレクサンドロス大王の信任もっとも厚かった臣僚の1人。クレタ島出身。とくに水師提督として傑出し、遠征末期のインダス川下航およびペルシア湾までの沿岸航海の指揮をとった。大王のアラビア探検計画にも提督を予定されていた。大王没後はアンティゴノス1世につき、ガザの戦い（前312）において戦死したらしい。航海誌風の述作があったらしいが、それは隠滅し、わずかにアリアヌスの『インド誌』やストラボンの『地理誌』（ともにローマ時代）などの典拠となったと推察される。引用行文の信憑(しんぴょう)性は高い。
