Hosokawa Gracia

Japanese:
Hosokawa Gracia

Wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki. She was also famous as a Christian woman. Gracia was her religious name, her real name was Tama. Daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, she married Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yusai)'s eldest son Yoichiro Tadaoki through the intercession of Oda Nobunaga. While living in Miyazu, Tango (Kyoto Prefecture), the intelligent Tama learned about Zen Buddhism, but after the Honnoji Incident (1582), she was imprisoned in Mito, Tango as the daughter of a rebel. She was eventually allowed to return to the Hosokawa residence in Osaka, where she was indirectly taught about the Christian sect by her husband Tadaoki, and was attracted to him. Then, in 1587 (Tensho 15), while Tadaoki was away serving in the Kyushu campaign, she visited a church in Osaka and continued to learn Christian doctrine through a maid, who then baptized her under the Christian name of Gracia. She then deepened her Christian faith within the residence, but in 1600 (Keicho 5), her husband Tadaoki sided with the Tokugawa during the Battle of Sekigahara, and Gracia was forced to enter Osaka Castle as a hostage by the Toyotomi side. While surrounded by Ishida forces at the Hosokawa residence in Tamatsukuri, Osaka, she took her own life at the hands of her retainers (July 16).
