Uesugi Shigesada

The eighth lord of the Yonezawa Domain (Yamagata Prefecture) in the mid-Edo period. Son of Yoshinori and younger brother of the previous lord, Munefusa. Childhood name Naochiyo, Shigesada came of age. Entered Yonezawa in 1747. He was more interested in Noh than politics, and encouraged his retainers to take up Noh and Ranbu (Nohgaku) in addition to the arts and martial arts. During the Horeki period (1751-64), the Yonezawa Domain received an order from the shogunate to repair the central hall of Toeizan in 1751, but in 1764, due to a severe famine, the domain was in financial difficulty and even suffered destruction of the castle town. To overcome these difficulties, the domain appointed Mori Heiemon, but his excessive autocratic nature deepened the conflict with the upper echelons of the vassals. Mori was assassinated in 1763, and Shigesada himself was forced to retire as lord of the domain by reformers in 1767. <References> "Yonezawa City History" Early Modern Period Volume 2

江戸中期の米沢藩(山形県)8代藩主。吉憲の子で,前藩主宗房の弟。幼名直千代,元服して重定となる。延享4(1747)年米沢入部。政治より謡曲に傾倒し,文武のほかに,謡曲や乱舞(能楽)に心掛けることを藩士に奨励した。宝暦期(1751～64)の米沢藩は,同3年幕府より東叡山中堂修理を命ぜられ,5年は大凶作のため,財政は窮乏し,城下町打ちこわしも発生した。これらを乗り切るため,森平右衛門を登用したが,あまりに専制的であり,家臣団上層部との対立を深めることになった。宝暦13(1763)年,森は暗殺され,重定自身も明和4(1767)年,改革派により藩主隠退を強要された。<参考文献>『米沢市史』近世編2
