A statue of a Buddha or Bodhisattva that is the main object of worship and worship in a temple or Buddhist hall. It is also called the principal Buddha or principal priest, and when accompanied by attendants and attendants, such as the Shaka Triad, it is also called the central image. The principal image varies depending on the origin of the temple's founding and the faith of the donor. Each sect also has a certain number of principal images; for example, in Esoteric Buddhism, the principal image is Dainichi Nyorai, in Pure Land Buddhism, Amida Buddha or the Amida Triad, and in the Nichiren sect, the principal image is the Great Mandala of the Ten Worlds, painted by Nichiren.

寺院や仏堂において供養・信仰の対象となる主尊たる仏・菩薩(ぼさつ)像のこと。本仏、本師ともいい、釈迦(しゃか)三尊像のように脇侍(きょうじ)や眷属(けんぞく)を従えた場合には、中尊ともよばれる。本尊は寺院創立の由来や施主の信仰などによって異なる。また各宗派によってそれぞれ一定の本尊があり、たとえば密教では大日如来(だいにちにょらい)、浄土教では阿弥陀仏(あみだぶつ)または弥陀三尊、日蓮(にちれん)宗では日蓮の描いた十界勧請大曼荼羅(じっかいかんじょうだいまんだら)などを本尊としている。
