Silicate minerals are classified into six types based on their crystal structure, and nesosilicate is one of them, and is sometimes called orthosilicate. In the structure, independent Si-O tetrahedrons (four oxygen atoms occupy the vertices of a tetrahedron, with silicon at the center) are bonded to other SiO ₄ tetrahedrons via metal cations other than Si. Another characteristic is that the Si in the tetrahedron is not replaced by Al. All nesosilicate minerals show relatively dense packing of oxygen ions and metal ions.

ケイ酸塩鉱物はその結晶構造を基にして6種に分類されるが，そのうちの一つをいい，オルトケイ酸塩鉱物と呼ばれることもある。構造の中で独立したSi－Oの正四面体(4個の酸素が正四面体の頂点の位置を占め，その中心にケイ素が存在)は他のSiO₄四面体とSi以外の金属陽イオンを媒介として結合している。また四面体中のSiはAlで置換されていないのが特徴の一つである。すべてのネソケイ酸塩鉱物は比較的密につまった酸素イオンと金属イオンのパッキングを示している。
