A seaweed of the family Valoniaceae in the order Acroporales, green algae. It grows on the base of rocks in the intertidal zone. The algae are short and cylindrical. They produce numerous branches that grow horizontally at the bottom and upright at the top, reaching a height of about 5 cm. They are polykaryotic, with all algal cells connected, and are found in the southern seas. V. macrophysa is found on the Pacific coast of central Honshu (Shimoda), among other places. 緑藻類ミドリゲ目バロニア科の海藻。潮間帯の岩の裾などに着生している。藻体は短円筒形。多数の枝を出して,下は横に伸び,上は立上がり,高さ 5cmほどになる。全藻細胞が連絡している多核体で,南海に分布する。タマゴバロニア V. macrophysaは本州中部の太平洋岸 (下田) などにみられる。
