…The story of Yi Ya, who was the chef of Duke Huan of Qi during the Spring and Autumn Period and was a seasoning genius, can be found in many historical sources, including the Zuo Zhuan. According to the Guanzi, when Duke Huan said he had never tasted steamed infants, Yi Ya steamed his first-born son and served it to the Duke. Some criticize him for not being worthy of being called a chef, but he is praised as one of the masters of cooking, as can be seen from the famous cookbook Yi Ya Yiyi published during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1619). In China, chefs as a profession can be broadly divided into private chefs and official chefs of the imperial court and government offices. …
