…In the Edo period, the branches were classified into three families, family lines, three noble families, and tributaries. The Owari family, whose founder was Ieyasu's ninth son Yoshinao, the Kii family, whose founder was Ieyasu's tenth son Yorinobu, and the Mito family, whose founder was his eleventh son Yorifusa, were the three families that had the right to inherit the head family. Later, the three noble families of Tayasu, Hitotsubashi, and Shimizu, whose founders were the eighth shogun Yoshimune's sons Munetake and Munetada, and the ninth shogun Ieshige's son Shigeyoshi, were added to this, and their direct descendants, along with the main family, called themselves Tokugawa. The family lines were the Echizen Matsudaira family, whose founder was Ieyasu's second son Yuki Hideyasu, and the Aizu family, whose founder was Hidetada's son Hoshina Masayuki (later calling himself Matsudaira), and the tributaries were the children of the above who became daimyo, and called themselves Matsudaira along with the branch families up until the early modern period. …
