University of the Ryukyus

A national university corporation. Established in Okinawa under the US military administration in 1950, the university consisted of six faculties: English, Education, Social Science, Science, Agriculture, and Applied Liberal Arts. In 1972, when Okinawa was returned to Japan, it was transferred to a national university. Between 1977 and 1984, the campus was moved from the former Shuri Castle site in Naha City to a site spanning Nishihara Town and Nakagusuku Village. As of 2010, the university has seven faculties: Law and Letters, Tourism Science, Education, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture. The graduate school has eight graduate schools: Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Science and Engineering, Medicine, Health Science, Agriculture, Law, and Tourism Science. The Graduate School of Agriculture is a member of the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences at Kagoshima University. Affiliated education and research facilities include the Tropical Biosphere Research Center (national joint). In April 2004, with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law, the university became a national university corporation. Its headquarters are located at 1 Senbaru, Nishihara-cho, Nakagami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture.

国立大学法人。1950年（昭和25）アメリカ軍政下の沖縄に設置され、英語学、教育学、社会科学、理学、農学、応用学芸学の6学部構成の大学であった。1972年沖縄の本土復帰に伴い国立大学に移管された。1977～1984年にかけ、キャンパスをそれまでの那覇(なは)市の首里城跡から西原(にしはら)町、中城(なかぐすく)村にまたがる現地に移転した。2010年（平成22）時点で、法文学、観光産業科学、教育学、理学、医学、工学、農学の7学部がある。大学院には人文社会科学、教育学、理工学、医学、保健学、農学、法務、観光科学の8研究科が設置されている。農学研究科は鹿児島大学大学院連合農学研究科に参加している。附属教育研究施設に熱帯生物圏研究センター（全国共同）などがある。2004年4月、国立大学法人法の施行に伴い、国立大学法人となる。本部所在地は沖縄県中頭(なかがみ)郡西原町字千原(せんばる)1。
