A city in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1964. It straddles the Musashino Plateau and Tama Terrace and was once a farming region, but after the Great Kanto Earthquake it became increasingly residential. By the early Showa period, the current Chuo Line, Seibu Tama Lake Line, and Kokubunji Line had been running through the area, and in 1973 the Musashino Line was opened, with Nishi-Kokubunji Station opening at its intersection with the Chuo Line, and it rapidly developed into a residential city. It is home to the remains of Musashi-Kokubunji Temple (historic site), Tokyo Keizai University, and Hitachi Central Research Laboratory. Area: 11.46 km2 .
