Sault Sainte Marie

Japanese: スー･セント･メリー（英語表記）Sault Sainte Marie

The two cities of the same name are located on either side of the St. Mary's River, which connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron in North America. The river forms the border between Canada and the United States. The city on the north bank of the Canadian side is in the province of Ontario and has a population of 81,000 (1991), while the city on the American side is in the state of Michigan and has a population of 15,000 (1990). The rapids of the river form the Sault Ste. Mary Canal, and both cities are important port cities. The steel industry is also thriving on the Canadian side. The two cities are connected by a bridge.

北アメリカのスペリオル湖とヒューロン湖を結ぶセント･メリーズ川をはさんで対面する同名の二つの都市。この川はカナダとアメリカ合衆国との国境をなし，北岸のカナダ側の都市はオンタリオ州に属し人口8万1000(1991)，アメリカ側はミシガン州に属し人口1万5000(1990)。川の急流部はスー･セント･メリー運河となっており，両市ともに港湾都市として重要。また，カナダ側は製鉄業が盛んである。なお，両市は橋で結ばれている。
