Gas Light and Coke Company

…In 1812, the London and Westminster Gas Company was established. This company later changed its name to the Gas Light and Coke Company, and by 1823, it was already supplying 250 million cubic feet (7 million m3) of gas per year. In London, gas was widespread in Piccadilly and other areas from 1814 onwards, and was also installed in Bristol in 1823, but was gradually replaced by electric lighting from the 1880s onwards.
