The historical name for the region between the Dniester and Bug rivers in Ukraine. From the 10th to the 13th century, it was under the control of the Kievan Rus, but later came under the control of Tatars, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Turkey, and others, and in 1795, it became part of Russia during the Third Partition of Poland. During World War II, the German army carried out a genocide of the Jews here. After the war, it was confirmed as part of the Soviet Union. Currently, most of it belongs to Ukraine.
