Japanese Almanac - Nihon Saijiki
A saijiki. The title is also called "Jyusen Nihon Saijiki" or "Fuso Saijiki". Written by Kaibara Koko and supplemented by Kaibara Sonken (Masken Atsushin). Published by Nisshindo in Kyoto in March 1688 (Jokyo 5). The original is 7 volumes and 7 books. There are also 4 books on half-sized paper. The preface states, "I have written down miscellaneous historical events from the last 360 years, translating those that appeared in Chinese writing into Japanese writing, and have also written down what I have seen and heard about in my country," and describes the appropriateness of the season for the general public. It is an enlightening almanac that divides the years into 12 months and arranges for each month official affairs, festivals, agricultural matters, food and clothing in the style of annual events, explains alternative names, Chinese names, origins, and historical events, and even includes illustrations and examples of poetry.

歳時記。書名は《重鐫(じゆうせん)日本歳時記》また《榑桑(ふそう)歳時記》ともいう。貝原好古(かいばらこうこ)著,貝原損軒(益軒篤信)删補(さんほ)。1688年(貞享5)3月,京都日新堂刊。大本7巻7冊。半紙本4冊もある。凡例に〈三百六旬の間の故実雑事を,唐土の文に出たるをば我国の文字にやはらげ,又我国の事をば見もし聞けるにしたがひて書つゞけ侍りぬ〉と述べて,民間を対象に歳時の事宜を叙述した。四季12ヵ月に分かち,各月に公事,祭礼,農事,衣食等を年中行事風に配列し,異名,漢名,来由,故事を説き,図解や詩歌の作例をも掲げるなど啓蒙的な歳時記である。
