...Tirod was later expanded by the philosopher Seneca, and continued to be used in religious matters for a long time afterwards. Modern shorthand began in 1588 with a proposal by the Englishman Timothy Bright (1550-1615), but Willis shorthand was developed in 1602 and put into practical use, and was used in religious matters. Mason shorthand was developed in 1672 and Gurney shorthand (1750), which is a descendant of Mason shorthand, was used for courtroom shorthand.
