…The coast is roughly parallel to 66.5° south latitude, and the inland reaches an elevation of 3,000 m. In 1838-42, Charles Wilkes (1798-1877), an American naval officer, explored the Pacific Ocean and Antarctica with five ships. One of the expeditions approached the coast and recognized Antarctica as a continent. Later, the place was named after the captain of the expedition. …
