Wilkes, J.

…A radical political movement led by John Wilkes (1727-97) in the 1760s and 1770s in England, which opposed the oligarchic parliamentary system of government of the king and the nobility. Wilkes was born as the second son of a wealthy London brewer, and after studying at Leiden University, he became a member of the House of Commons for Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire) in 1757. In 1762 he founded the weekly newspaper North Briton, which attacked the government of Prime Minister Bute, who was the trusted of King George III.
