Warwickshire is the capital of the county of Warwickshire in central England. It is located about 30 km southeast of Birmingham and faces the Avon, a tributary of the Severn. A settlement was formed at the crossing point of the Avon from around the 8th century, and a fortress against the Danes was built around 915. The Domesday Book (1086), a land survey by William I, records that there were 225 houses here. A market was allowed to be opened in 1261, but the first royal charter was not granted until 1545. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, plays a part in the automobile industry in the Midlands, and various light industries are carried out. Most of Warwick Castle today was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, but some parts from the Anglo-Saxon period remain. Many buildings from the Middle Ages, such as St. Mary's Cathedral and Leicester Hospital, are also preserved, and tourism is thriving. Population: 23,350 (2001). Warwick |
