This is chlorotris(triphenylphosphine)rhodium [RhCl{P(C ₆ H ₅ ) ₃ } ₃ ]. It was synthesized in 1965 by G. Wilkinson and his group, and was studied in detail, so it is called by this name today. It is obtained by heating rhodium trichloride RhCl ₃ ･3H ₂ O and excess triphenylphosphine in alcohol. At this time, the excess triphenylphosphine acts as a reducing agent, and it becomes triphenylphosphine oxide O=P(C ₆ H ₅ ) _3. Deep red crystals. Soluble in chloroform and dichloromethane, slightly soluble in benzene and toluene. The solution reacts with oxygen in the air to produce [RhCl{P(C ₆ H ₅ ) ₃ } ₂ ]O ₂ . It reacts reversibly with hydrogen at room temperature and pressure to give cis- [RhCl(H ₂ ){P(C ₆ H ₅ ) ₃ } ₂ ]. When it reacts with carbon monoxide, trans- [RhCl(CO){P(C ₆ H ₅ ) ₃ } ₂ ] is obtained. Furthermore, many oxidative addition reactions with halogen compounds have been observed. The most notable property of this complex is that it acts as an effective homogeneous hydrogenation catalyst for alkenes and acetylenes at room temperature and pressure. This catalytic action is believed to proceed because one of the P(C ₆ H ₅ ) ₃ moieties is easily dissociated in solution, and the substrate coordinates to the vacant coordination site.

クロロトリス(トリフェニルホスフィン)ロジウム[RhCl{P(C₆H₅)₃}₃]のこと．1965年にG. Wilkinson(ウィルキンソン)一派によって合成され，詳しい研究がなされたので，今日この名称でよばれるようになった．三塩化ロジウムRhCl₃･3H₂Oと過剰のトリフェニルホスフィンとをアルコール中で加熱すると得られる．このとき，過剰のトリフェニルホスフィンは還元剤としてはたらいて，自身はトリフェニルホスフィンオキシドO=P(C₆H₅)₃となる．深赤色の結晶．クロロホルム，ジクロロメタンに可溶，ベンゼン，トルエンに微溶．溶液は空気中の酸素と反応して[RhCl{P(C₆H₅)₃}₂]O₂を生じる．水素とは常温・常圧で可逆的に反応してcis-[RhCl(H₂){P(C₆H₅)₃}₂]を与える．一酸化炭素との反応では，trans-[RhCl(CO){P(C₆H₅)₃}₂]が得られる．さらにハロゲン化合物との酸化的付加反応も数多く見いだされている．この錯体のもっとも顕著な特性は，常温・常圧下でアルケンおよびアセチレンの有効な均一系水素化触媒としてはたらくことである．この触媒作用は，P(C₆H₅)₃の一つが溶液中で解離しやすく，その空いた配位座へ基質が配位して進行するものとされている．
