From 1606 to 1608, he went to Tyrol and sketched mountain landscapes in the Alps. In 1614, he served Emperor Matthias, the younger brother of Rudolf II, in Vienna, and then settled in Utrecht. He excelled in fantastical landscapes that used images from mythology and the Bible and depicted exotic plants and animals that lived in jungles and forests.
