Jun Shida - Jun Shida

Geophysicist. Born in Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1901 (Meiji 34). After serving as a professor at Hiroshima Higher Normal School and First Higher School, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Kyoto Imperial University, which was founded in 1909, and conducted research on earth tides and earthquakes at the attached Kamigamo Seismological Observatory. He noticed the regularity in the distribution of initial motions of seismic waves early on, but it was not until 1917 (Taisho 6) that he was made a professor the following year, in 1918. He also noticed the existence of deep earthquakes early on, but it was not until 1926 that he made an announcement. He also made pioneering achievements in volcano research, opening a geophysical research institute in Beppu in 1924 and the Aso Volcano Observatory in 1928 (Showa 3). In 1929, he was awarded the Imperial Academy Prize for his research on "the rigidity of the earth and crust, and seismic motion."
