A descendant of the Tubo dynasty, his name means "son of Buddha." His real name was Guananling Onjipu. Pushed by leaders from the Qingtang region, he attempted to unify the Tubo, first establishing an independent state in Guozhou (Ashigong, northwest of Guide), then in Zongge (bPsong-kha), and then in Miaochuan (Nanbo). He sought the assistance of the Song dynasty on the condition that he would attack the Western Xia, and eventually established a kingdom in Qingtang. His role as the reincarnation of the Buddha, ruling both politically and militarily, is reminiscent of the later Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama of Tibet. [Okazaki Seiro]

吐蕃王朝の後裔に当たり，その名は〈仏の子〉の意。本名は欺南陵温籛逋。青唐方面の領袖らに推されて吐蕃の統一をはかり，はじめ郭州(阿什貢，貴徳の北西)に，ついで宗哥(bPsong‐kha)に，さらに邈川（ばくせん）(碾伯)に独立国を建て，西夏攻撃を条件に宋の援助を求め，やがて青唐に王国をきずくが，仏の再生として政治･軍事両面を統べた彼の姿は，後世チベットのダライ･ラマ，パンチェン･ラマを思わせる。【岡崎精郎】
