The position of Governor-General in India was created in 1774, 17 years after the Battle of Plassey, when the British East India Company was expanding its territories. It was originally called the Governor-General of Fort William in Bengal. In 1834 he became the Governor-General of India, and at one time also served as Governor of Bengal.
